May 5, 2009 Update -  Solo Vino is still resting at his foster mom's in Mesa. He is doing very well and has regained much of his energy. His ringbone continues to be a problem for Solo Vino and he is still taking Adequan, an injection given to him weekly for his pain. Thank you all for your continued interest in his recovery. You have  all been remarkable!!!


With much gratitude and thanks to  Dr. Christiansen, Dr. Cooper and Staff at East Valley Equine for taking such good care of Solo Vino!!!!!!  And to Gwen Cleary and Eric for taking such good care of this wonderful boy!!

3/22/09 Update - Solo Vino - a six year old  thoroughbred gelding -  reported on 3/3/09 with two shoes on his feet, severe ring bone and major head trauma.
 According to the vet the area at the top of the head between the ears is called the poll,  underneath this lies the skull and a bony protrusion called the nuchal crest, which could be compared to the occipatal lobe or area in our own skull.  The nuchal crest has a ligament that runs down to the cervical vertibrae I, II and down to T1 etc...This ligament helps hold the horses head up right and runs along the neck.  The right side of the nuchal cresst had broken off and has displaced along with the ligament approximately 5 inches back and needed to be removed.  There was deep infection which had actually had to be removed from the bone and deep tissue.  This injury was at least 2 weeks old prior to us getting him on the 3rd of march.  This had to be a significant blow to the head to cause such a fracture.

Solo Vino's journey has  brought him to all of you kind and caring individuals, who have helped save his life!  I know  he is  so grateful and realizes he's supported from the East Coast to the West....Someday in the near future he will be able to once again hang out in the pasture with some friends, smelling the desert cactus and munching on treats from his loving caretakers.   The healing will be a long process and he is half way there...he will need to stay in the hospital a short time longer but will be able to come back to his foster home in mesa until he is strong enough to come home to the sanctuary.

Solo will need supplements for his arthritis in his ankle to help him stay comfortable as long as possible.  solo had been neglected for so long that he will want to eat everything he can and we have to make sure he gets the proper rations so he will put on weight gradually.

We will continue to give period updates and let everyone know when he comes back to foster care...

**** As of yesterday 3/21/09, Solo Vino quietly loaded on to the trailer and made his short journey back to Gwen's, where he will snuggle with his new friends and live in a loving foster environment. His head wound is partially healed and he is on the road to recovery!! A HUGE thanks to all of you who have prayed for him and have helped in his recovery.
