Apollo
Age: 36 years Gender: Gelding
Apollo was brought to us in April, 2015 after being found abandoned in Dog Patch south of Tucson. Apollo had a tumor in his left eye that we had removed the day after he arrived. The cancer later returned and in December, 2015 we had the eye completely removed to keep the cancer from spreading to other areas of his body. Apollo is a very well-trained horse who came in with three shoes on, one apparently lost somewhere in the desert.
An older horse like Apollo that has health issues would normally end up going directly to slaughter. When we get cases like Apollo in, we have to wonder why someone would just abandon him? Did he belong to an older person who passed on and the family didn’t know what to do with the horse so they set him out? Did the owner not want to have to deal with the cost of surgery and figured since he was such an old horse they should just throw him away as he wasn’t worth keeping? We will probably never have the answers as to why Apollo was abandoned. We are just happy that this sweet, 30-year old guy ended up here with us where he can get the care he needs to enjoy the rest of his life.
Apollo is quite comfortable in his surroundings, especially with his herd, Janelle and Samson. He has a bit of arthritis and on cold nights needs to be stabled with a heat lamp to warm him. But otherwise he is a handsome, confident guy who is always agreeable.
