The weakening economy has many families living on a tight budget. When there’s not enough to go around many families are being forced to give up their pets, and in some cases, their horses.

At Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary, young horses like Savannah want a loving home. She was abandoned three months ago by her owners.

“Nobody wanted her because she was untrained and afraid of people. So she was at a high rate of going to an auction and most likely slaughter,” says Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary President Karen Pomroy.

It’s not uncommon for people to abandon horses. It costs a lot of money to feed them, shoe them, and care for them.

“I think more and more because of the economy and hay prices. And people being foreclosed on, unfortunately animals are usually the first to suffer,” Pomroy says.

And it’s not just big animals like horses. The Humane Society has seen an increase too.

“We’re also seeing a great influx of animals from apartment managers and realtors when they go to a home that’s been foreclosed on or the lease has been lost and they find animals in the dwelling,” says animal cruelty investigator Mike Duffey.

Equine Voices usually takes in horses rescued from the drug industry. They say they’ll help you find a home for your horse because it beats the alternative.

“Typically if we cannot help them, they end up in slaughter,” Pomroy says.
